Undergraduate Awards and Honors
Senior Awards
Academic Excellence in Chemistry— Qualifications: graduating senior. Chemistry majors with a cumulative QPA of 3.20 and above will receive a plaque recognizing their scholarly achievements.
American Institute of Chemists Award —Qualifications: graduating senior, majoring in Chemistry who has demonstrated potential for advancement in the chemical professions based on leadership, ability, character, and scholastic achievement. Award consists of an embossed scroll and a one year Student Associate membership in AIC. Award includes a subscription to “The Chemist”. Presentation of award to be made at the award ceremony in May.
College of Arts & Sciences Dean’s Outstanding Senior Award —Qualifications: graduating senior, one candidate per department. To be eligible, a student must have completed requirements for the baccalaureate degree with a major in one of the departments in FNSM and must have exhibited outstanding academic achievement and promise for the future.
Hypercube Scholar Award— Qualifications: graduating senior demonstrating scholastic achievement in chemistry. The award consists of the software package “HyperChem”, professional version, and certificate.
Merck Index Award —Qualifications: graduating senior, chosen by the department. Award: The Merck Index, imprinted with recipient’s name. Present of award to be made at the May awards ceremony.
Outstanding Citizen Award —A plaque will be given to the outstanding graduating senior who has demonstrated much enthusiasm and involvement with the Chemistry Department and SAACS on its various projects.
Phi Beta Kappa Omicron Chapter of NY —To be eligible for election, a candidate must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.50 after completion of 100 credit hours, or for election as a junior, a minimum of 3.75 average after completion of 85 credit hours. Transfer students must have completed at least 32 hours at UB. Criteria for election also include a breadth of the student’s academic program.
Phi Lambda Upsilon —(Honorary Chemical Society)—Qualifications: Senior standing with 30 hours of chemistry completed; ran in top 20% of chemistry students, and a minimum grade point average of 3.5/4.0. National Office will make direct contact with students nominated and extend an invitation to them with an indication of department’s nomination.
WNY Section of ACS Outstanding Senior Award —Qualifications: graduating senior, accepted to a graduate school, outstanding scholarly achievement or contribution to chemistry. Presentation of award made at a regularly scheduled section meeting of the WNY/ACS, where the awardee is a guest for dinner. Awardees receive an appropriate certificate and one year’s paid membership in the ACS.
Junior Awards
Alumni Scholarship —Qualifications: scholastic excellence in chemistry, chosen by the department, awardees must have completed their third undergraduate year before fall and are expected to be enrolled as seniors during the following academic year.
Analytical Section of ACS Award in Analytical Chemistry —Qualifications: Awardees must have completed their third undergraduate year before fall and are expected to be enrolled as senior during the following academic year. Awardees must show an aptitude for a career in Analytical Chemistry. Award: 15-month subscription to the journal “Analytical Chemistry”, and an honorary membership in the Division of Analytical Chemistry. Subscription will begin in October and continue through the following December.
Peter T. Lansbury Undergraduate Research Award —Qualifications: Chemistry major, research proposal submitted to and voted on by the department. The research is then conducted during the summer between a student’s junior and senior year, preferably in organic chemistry, however all proposals will be reviewed and considered.
Sophomore Awards
Award for Outstanding Achievement in Organic Chemistry —A “Merck Index” will be presented to the 6 or 7 individuals who have done outstanding work in Organic Chemistry 201-202 or 251-252.
Freshman Awards
CRC Award for Achievement in Freshman Chemistry —Award: Current edition of the “CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics”, 10-12 copies of the current “CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics” are presented to the outstanding freshmen in Chemistry 101-102, 105-106 and 107-108. Presentations are made in May at the Award Ceremony.
William E. Townsend Scholarship —One award per year to a freshman chemistry major, preferably from the Western New York area, with demonstrated financial need and possession of good personal characteristics in terms of attitude, personality, citizenship and leadership. The award will be given to the student for four years, provided they remain a chemistry major in good standing with the University.
