Research facilities at the UB Department of Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry is located within the Natural Sciences Complex. The building provides more than 160,000 square feet of modern research space, is home to over two dozen faculty-directed research groups, and houses a full complement of modern instrumentation and support facilities. The Department is also in close proximity to the central Science and Engineering Library containing millions of books, journals, and technical reports. A significant portion of the journal collection is available electronically on and off campus back as far as the early 1800's. See the UB Libraries section.

In addition to the state-of-the-art research instrumentation available in the individual research groups, the Department maintains a comprehensive Chemistry Instrument Center. Major research instrumentation available within the Department includes:

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR):

Inova-750, -600, -500, -400, and Gemini-300 MHz NMR spectrometers.

NMR

Lasers:

Over 25 cw/pulsed laser light sources including: argon-ion, He-Cd, N2, Nd:YAG, excimer, dye, CO, CO2, Cu vapor, fs colliding pulse mode-locked and ps/fs Ti:sapphire lasers, optical parametric oscillators, and regenerative amplifiers.

X-Ray:

Rigaku-High Brilliance Rotating anode (Mo)
BRUKER diffractometer equipped with
        APEX II CCD detector
Oxford Cryosystem - 700 series Cryostream

Spectroscopy:

Mattson Polaris FT-IR, Perkin-Elmer 1760x FT-IR microscope, Chromex 250 cmi CCD-based Raman, SLM 8100 fluorescence spectrometer, SLM 48000 MHF frequency-domain fluorometer, and an IBH 5000 W SAFE time correlated single photon counting system.

Other:

A Bruker ESP-300E EPR spectrometer, International Scientific Instruments Super II model 3 scanning electron microscope, Perkin-Elmer DSC-7/TGA-7 differential scanning calorimeter/thermogravimetric analyzer, and Hewlett Packard GC (w/FID, TC, and MS detectors).

Mass Spectrometry (MS) and Surface Analysis:

PHI model 7200 imaging time-of- flight secondary ion MS with microfocusing Cs+ source and heatable/coolable sample handling, Bruker BioApex 30 es FT-MS with electrospray interface, VG 70-SE double- focusing high resolution mass spectrometer with positive and negative ion chemical ionization capabilities, accurate mass measurements and GC-MS analysis, a Campargue cluster beam source with Extrel triple quadrupole MS, and a Perkin-Elmer series 5400 ESCA with dual Ti/Mg anode available for angle-resolved studies, ion scattering spectroscopy and depth profiling.

The Department also maintains a plenitude of mini- and microcomputers and Silicon Graphics workstations for dedicated applications in research and teaching.

Support personnel include a full-time glass blower and two machinists, all equipped with the facilities necessary to construct and service the specialized equipment needed for the Department's research efforts. The Department's electronics shop enjoys three specialists in both analog and digital instrumentation. Much of their time is spent assisting various research groups in the design and construction of custom support electronics.
