Organic Chemistry at UB

Organic synthesis and asymmetric catalysis, drug discovery, protein and nucleic acid chemistry, bioorganic chemistry, molecular biochemistry, molecular recognition and architecture

The organic chemistry division has experienced phenomenal growth. The division is extremely well funded. This ensures that students can be involved in state-of-the-art research in very well-equipped laboratories. Furthermore, due to the rapid rise in activity, the research programs are becoming highly visible and our students are better positioned than ever for future career options.

The organic chemistry division's interests are in organic, bioorganic, and materials chemistry. Faculty interests include the synthesis of complex molecules, development of new methods using organometallic reagents, molecular recognition, and drug discovery. Interdisciplinary research is another major pursuit of the division; research topics in molecular biochemistry, enzymology, and catalysis by proteins are all under active study.

The synergy that exists between the organic and medicinal chemistry divisions offers very attractive opportunities for students who may eventually be interested in careers in the pharmaceutical industry. In addition to obtaining a strong grounding in organic chemistry, students may take elective courses in pharmaceutically relevant courses, such as drug design or combinatorial chemistry. This added breadth greatly enhances future hiring options.
