Graduate Program

Research at Buffalo is at a very exciting stage. Having occupied a state-of-the-art building, merged the departments of Chemistry and Medicinal Chemistry and added several recent faculty, the research activity of the program is very energized. As a moderately large graduate program with 33 faculty and more than 125 graduate students, we have the critical mass for the state-of-the-art instrumentation required for modern research in chemistry. Still, the program is sufficiently small to have a nurturing and supportive environment for all the students.

Admission Requirements

The UB Graduate School requires a baccalaureate degree or its equivalent for admission. Applicants should also demonstrate aptitude in the physical sciences and mathematics, as evidenced by their undergraduate transcripts. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores and three letters of recommendation are required for admission. The score in the GRE Chemistry Subject Test is useful but not required. GRE scores in the 50th percentile or higher are desirable. For international students a TOEFL paper score of at least 550 or an iBT score of at least 90 with Speak Sections above 20 is required for standard admission. Most of the accepted international students would have obtained a paper TOEFL score of at least 600 and an iBT score of 100.

Standard Admission Minimums for UB:
550 Paper Test
213 Computer Test
79 Internet Test

Conditional Admission Minimums for UB:
500 Paper Test
173 Computer Test
60-78 Internet Test

Teaching and Financial Support

The Department recognizes the educational value of the teaching process. Entering Ph.D. students are normally offered teaching assistantships, usually in the Freshman Chemistry or Sophomore Organic program. Teaching assistants supervise small recitation and/or laboratory sections for not more than nine contact hours a week. Total time required, including grading, office hours, and preparation, is typically 16 hours per week.

Currently, Assistantship stipends for incoming students are $25,080. This includes a $22,080 Teaching Assistantship for the academic year and a $3,000 Research Assistantship for the summer. Several supplementary fellowships in the range of $2,000-8,000 are available for outstanding students. All students in good academic standing will receive continued support in subsequent years, either as Teaching Assistants or Research Assistants. Individual research directors provide Research Assistantships for their advanced students. These appointments allow students to devote full time to thesis research.

All students receiving assistantships in the Department during the academic year also receive full Tuition Scholarships.
