General Course Objectives

To understand the body of information which comprises chemical literature
To develop skills required to effectively and efficiently utilize the literature as students and professionals

Specific CHE 376 Learning Objectives

Effective use of the library print material, CD-ROM, electronic material, and scientific information on the World Wide Web.
Understand the standard library classification system.
Utilize major reference sources:
  1. Chemical Abstracts and SciFinder Scholar - print and electronic access
  2. Landolt Börnstein Handbook
  3. Beilstein Handbook - print and electronic
  4. Gmelin Handbook
  5. Web of Science 
Distinguish between primary (journal articles and patents) and secondary literature sources.
Utilize current awareness sources
Utilize monographs, reviews, reference books and publications pertaining to the technical literature
Become knowledgeable about Government Documents and Patent Literature.
Learn how to use standard collections of spectra (IR, UV, NMR, Mass Spectra).
Become familiar with sources of physical data and locate data for specific compounds using print and electronic access.
Learn basic methods for accessing electronic data.
